Case Studies of Participation and Performance in the IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous 2-year course of study designed to provide students with thorough preparation for postsecondary education. In response to an observed gap in the participation and performance of low-income and minority students in the Diploma Programme across the United States, the IB Organization seeks to expand access and improve outcomes among students from these underrepresented groups. To this end, the IB Organization commissioned case studies of two schools with unusually strong records recruiting low-income and minority students and ensuring their success in the Diploma Programme. SRI International was selected to conduct these case studies.

For each case study, data collection included interviews with teachers, school leaders, and district administrators; student and parent focus groups; analysis of data on student demographics, selection, participation, and performance; and an investigation of district and state policies that support the Diploma Programme. The case studies investigate the history and structure of each school’s Diploma Programme and consider school and district strategies and practices related to student recruitment, selection, enrollment and persistence, and achievement at each school. The case study findings are used to identify a series of lessons that can be considered in the broader efforts to expand access to the Diploma Programme and improve outcomes for underrepresented students.
