National Behavior Research Coordination Center (NBRCC)
In 2004, SRI launched the National Behavior Research Coordination Center (NBRCC). Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Special Education Research, Institute of Education Sciences (IES), NBRCC works closely with four university-based behavior research centers (BRCs) that are conducting randomized trials of interventions for students with severe behavior problems in first through third grades.
With input from an executive board, NBRCC has developed research questions that will drive its work over its 5-year life span. Questions address the extent to which the interventions improve the behavior and academic performance of participating students and sustain those improvements over time and the ways in which improvements vary for different kinds of students in different kinds of classrooms and schools. Issues of implementation fidelity, social validity, and intervention resource requirements also are being addressed.
The NBRCC also has developed common measures and data collection protocols to be used by the BRCs; data are being submitted to the NBRCC via a web-based data system. A cross-intervention analysis plan specifies analytic approaches to address the range of cross-intervention research questions, and a targeted dissemination strategy will maximize the value of the intervention research and cross-intervention analyses to multiple stakeholders.
Baseline data for students participating in intervention and control groups were generated in fall 2005, with the first measurement of intervention effects being conducted in spring 2006.
